Hi Linda,

In my opinion a husky should be walked on a good walking harness Smile but that will NOT stop him/her pulling lol just make it more comfortable, and it also means that you are not running the risk of the doing damage to the vertebrae in there necks.

It is possible to teach them not to pull but it takes time, and to make things more comfortable for you, you could get a walking belt Smile http://www.culpeppers.co.uk/catalogue/?_Culpep=42388824A314RJWOZYg&cat=backpacksandbags

Hope that helps

Tessa

P.s where in the midlands are you??

The best kind of harness to get for a Husky which will also stop pulling in most dogs is the Halti Harness the control point in on the chest of the dog you need a training lead for it because you clip one end of the lead to the chest and one on the back I think you can get the Halti harness from P@H

Thumb and here you can see a video of how it works and can order from them.

Have you used one then? Normal Smile
I recommend them or the K9 Bridle to everyone in classes that I take cause they stop the dog pulling but also aid in teaching the dog not to pull in the first place.
I find that normal harnesses actually give the dog something to pull against so the dog gets worse.

Please remember that this is a husky! A dog that has been bred to pull Smile like I said it is posible to get them to walk nicely but they also need a time to pull.

My dogs are good on the lead but will pull like mad for the first 5 mins and last 5 mins of any walk. My dogs also know the difference between the different leads and harnesses we use, so if I pick up the show bag they know they have to be good all day but if I pick up a working harness then they know its fun all day long lol

The halti's are good and I have used them on Dalmatian rescue that have come to me, but when I tried it on a husky it did not work and it hurt the dog Sad so be careful it is worth a try.

I would definately recommend that you get him castrated though.

You are only 30 mins from me if I can ever be of any use.

one last thing there is a great forum for husky/mally/sammy people (well all are welcome) but its for sled dog breeds http://www.sibespace.co.uk/forum/index.php

think i may get him castrated.only reason i asked as i was told the older the animal the more painfull and longer it takes to get over it. but want whats best for my beautiful boy.just looks like the white one you have playing with bailey.he such a gentle dog and lovely in the home.never barks does as he told.can not understand why he homed so often.he has only just started to come out of his shell.never wanted fuss or to play.now he the opposite.did read up on him before got one.put think them being sold on internet for anyone to buy is the prob why they keep being re homed.people just read the word husky and buy it.

A lot of dogs will chase and kill small animals if they are given the chance I have 2 HPR's one of which is a born hunter I have had to teach him a very strong recall to stop him chasing the deer, rabbit and pheasent on our walks but if he does catch something then I don't really mind but it's not good at this time of year cause it's breeding season.
I assume you know you aren't meant to let husky's off lead out and about though so chasing and killing shouldn't really be an issue for you.
Good luck with the halti and keep us updated with how you do he sounds like a lovely lad I'm glad he's settling in well with you Normal Smile
